A source from Vinod Chopra Productions says that the Department of Management at the UN contacted them, requesting for a screening followed by a two-hour long session with the members who will focus on how the film has impacted their lives and how each character influences the education system. Apparently, the UN sent invites expecting 175 Indian expats. However, 700 people turned up and the screening was shifted to a bigger venue.

Talking of the screening and the session, Hirani says, “Abhijat and I were overwhelmed by the response to the film in the US and the enthusiasm at the question-answer session. It was a humbling experience.”

It is seriously so sad that children films in India don’t gain as much as popularity, critical acclaim or even box office revenue. Sad mostly because children films actually house more sensible and interesting plots as opposed to a lot of the films that star perhaps more well-known stars. In more recent times, Taare Zameen Par is the only children’s film that went on to become a box office hit as well as India’s entry to the Oscars. But it was Darsheel Zafary who became the find of the year. Apparently, the young child artist, riding high from his debut hit film, even began behaving like a superstar, tantrums et al. Since then, the Zafary has been missing in action only to be back with Priyadarshan’s Bumm Bumm Bole. The film also starred Atul Kulkarni, Rituparna Sen Gupta and Baby Zia. A remake of the Iranian film, Children of Heaven, Bumm Bumm Bole is set to make you “aw” and gush.

In a suburban village, Khogiram (Atul Kulkarni) and his wife (Rituparna Sen Gupta) live on minimum wages from working on a tea farm, in hopes to educate their children, Pinu (Darsheel Zafary) and Rimzim (Baby Zia). When Khogiram loses her job and simultaneously Rimzim her shoes, the children realize they will have to hide the loss from their parents. Upset by the fact that their father cannot afford a meager pair of shoes, the siblings decide to share the only pair of shoes. They find themselves in quite a few close calls, Pinu decides to take part in the school marathon for which the first prize is a pair of shoes.

Bumm Bumm Bole is a sensitive and sensible film. In fact, Priyadarshan does an absolutely fantastic job of telling a story, making it entertaining and also delivering morals. And yes, you do gush and coo at many moments throughout the film. What works for the film is that it is honest and straightforward; there are no complicated situations that make you scratch your head. The problem with the film is its pace. Initially, you are engrossed at learning more about the family, their problems and so on. However, in the second half, the film slows down and becomes incredibly draggy. The climax goes on and the marathon scene really seems to run on for ages – no pun intended. So unfortunately, while the film works, it also doesn’t. Priyadarshan does an amazing job at shooting the locales and really Bumm Bumm Bole is a fine product. If only more attention was paid to the finale, he would have had a real winner on his hands.

Performance-wise, Darsheel is top notch. You immediately know why Aamir Khan was floored by the youngster and the likes of SRK and Saif Ali Khan realize that this young kid is on his way to becoming some solid competition for them in the future. It isn’t fair to compare his role in BBB to that of TZP. Honestly, they both are completely different in style and characterization. Atul Kulkarni and Rituparna Sen Gupta too are fantastic. They work as a couple together superbly and depict the characters of stressed parents with great élan. But it is Zia who steals every scene and your heart. She is beyond honest in her performance. Her eyes sparkle and her un-fussiness is really what sets her apart from the rest of the cast. And might I add, she is such a cutie pie!

The music is mediocre.

Comparisons to the Iranian film are inevitable and unfortunately BBB doesn’t compare to it. In fact, you’re much better off watching the foreign film versus the Hindi one. But that doesn’t mean that Bumm Bumm Bole isn’t worth a watch. The performances outweigh the plot and thus, if you need any reason to watch BBB, it’s simply for the amazing stars that do complete justice to the film.

He was all of eleven when the singer toured with his uncle in the U.K. and from then on, there was no turning back. Rahat became a singer in the Qawwali, Ghazal and Classical music. It was in 2004 that he became immensely popular in Bollywood when he sang for Pooja Bhatt’s film Paap. His song, ‘Mann Ki Lagan’ became an instant hit bringing Rahat to fame. From then on there was no looking back for this singer. Additional international accomplishments include working with Pearl Jam and Rahat was also heard in a number of Hollywood feature films including Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto and Dead Man Walking.

Over the last few years, Rahat’s unique and incredibly intense vocals have become popular amongst his fans locally and abroad. I, for one am a huge fan. The Bay Area in the U.S. was honored with a night of singer’s outstanding music during a recent tour and you can bet your last dollar I was there. The extremely humble singer began his concert seeking blessings from his late uncle and sang his late Uncle’s “Allahu” which bought the audiences to their feet as he filled the Oracle Arena with his intense singing. We were then blessed to hear him croon to yet another one of his hits, ‘O Re Piya’ from Aaja Nachle. As he switched between a song of his Uncles and one of his own, the crowd gained more and more momentum. His literally heavenly voice jutted out a number of the audiences’ favorites, ‘Naina’ from Omkara, ‘Jiya Dhadak Dhadak’ from Kalyug, ‘Mann Ki Lagan’ from Paap, ‘Bol Na Halke Halke’ from Jhoom Barabar Jhoom,’Jag Soona Soona Lage’ from Om Shanti Om, ‘Main Jahaan Rahoon’ from Namaste London, ‘Teri Ore’ from Singh is Kinng, ‘Ajj Din Chadheya’ from Love Aaj Kal,’Surili Akhiyon Wale’ from Veer, ‘Sajda’ from My Name is Khan and finally, ‘Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji’ from Ishqiya. The more he sang, the louder his fans seemed to get to the extent that they shooed away the promoters of the show with a thunderous noise demanding to hear more from the next maestro.

However, the highlight of the show came when the singer indulged in a jugalbandi with himself as he collaborated a medley of his Uncles most popular tracks, ‘Tumhein Dillagi Bhool Jaani Paregi’, ‘Akhiyan Udeek Diyan’ and ‘Yeh Jo Halka Halka Suroor Hai.’ Wow was the word as his singing simply took over your soul and stopped your breath. If you ever missed the senior maestro Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, he was definitely the hall, spirit and soul, looking at the audiences dancing and throwing money at his nephew. He was honored in the most grand of ways possible.

Breathtaking was the exact adjective to describe the four-hour concert and you were simply left asking for more. The singer was in great spirits and delivered just what he had promised, a concert of a lifetime. His incredibly soft and humble nature was expressed through his dignified and unique deliverance with his music. As an artist, Rahat is clearly one who understands the sentiments of his audiences who ranged ages; no one left dissatisfied.

Just like his name, which means “relief”, Rahat left you feeling a sense of respite when listening to him singing. It was a break from the usual useless meaningless music that is normally heard. Instead, you were treated to some intense music filled with thought provoking lyrics which made you laugh, cry, feel pain, reminisce and even dance. Definitely a concert of a lifetime and one not worth missing. If Rahat Fateh Ali Khan ever visits your city in the U.S. yet, I recommend you catch him in concert; it’s worth every penny.

‘We have very high expectations from ‘Kites’ as after ‘3 Idiots’ this will be the biggest release. We are going to have 13 shows per three screen and 14 shows per four property respectively for the movie,’ Deepak Taluja, senior vice president (business and operations) of Fun Cinemas, told IANS.

‘In terms of paid previews, as of now we just have one show (for Thursday night) but if (booking) response will be good, we’ll look for more,’ he added.

A senior executive from PVR cinemas said on condition of anonymity that ‘Kites’ has a very good pre-release buzz. ‘And after ‘3 Idiots’, we have very high hopes with this one. If all goes well, this could anywhere be the successor of ‘3 Idiots’.’

‘On an average we are keeping around 10-15 shows per property for the movie. The advance bookings have already opened and it’s picking up well while the paid preview bookings for Thursday is decent so far,’ the source added.

Produced by Rakesh Roshan and directed by Anurag Basu, ‘Kites’ is a mega-budget venture worth Rs.150 crore in three versions – English, Hindi and Spanish. While the Hindi version will hit screens Friday, the crisper and racier English version, edited by Hollywood fame Brett Ratner, is scheduled for a May 28 release.

The film also stars Kabir Bedi and Kangana Ranaut in cameos.

Releasing simultaneously on more than 2,300 screens worldwide, including over 500 overseas in over 60 countries, it is being distributed by Reliance Big Pictures.

Shot in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Santa Fe, ‘Kites’ is a love story about an Indian man and a Latin woman who fall in love without understanding each others’ languages. It is about their thrilling journey filled with precious moments and unexpected betrayal.

To cash in on the unprecedented buzz and hype, Amit Awasthi, manager (programming and operations) of Spice Cinemas, has big plans.

‘We are looking at ‘Kites’ as a super duper hit. We are going to have 33 shows per day for the movie with the capacity of 8,600 seats per day and we expect a mass footfall because of its successful commercial banner and huge star cast like Hrithik and Barbara,’ Awasthi said.

‘3 Idiots’ grossed about Rs.400 crore, making it Indian cinema’s highest earner.

”Kites’ will repeat the big bang theory in cinema. We are going to have on an average 15 shows per property and around three paid previews Thursday night. Hrithik and Barbara’s chemistry is going to scorch the screens,’ said Yogesh Raizada, corporate head (cinemas) of Wave Cinemas.

Director Basu says with its international appeal, ‘Kites’ will take Bollywood globally in the true sense.

Hrithik has often been equated to a Greek God by Bollywood followers and his chemistry with Mori has been a talking point. The actor’s lip locking moments with Mori even led to rumours that his marriage with Suzzanne was in trouble.

However, film maker Anurag Basu insists that ‘Kites’ is much more than just a skin fest.

“Of course, Barbara is attractive; we all know that. Still, it wasn’t just her sex appeal that made us sign her. She has done so much good work in films as well as on TV. I saw them and based on that, we decided that Barbara would be the right fit for ‘Kites’,” said Basu.

The director is aware that Mori is one of the top searched celebrities on internet today, at least in India, and audience expectation is pretty high from the young woman who is also a mother of a grown up kid in real life.

“Yes, people do search for her pictures on internet.

However, as a director I can vouch for the fact that she surprised when we were shooting the film. She has quite a few dramatic scenes in the film and I was wondering if she would be able to pull then off. But I was taken by surprise by her acting,” Basu added.

The director says he was so impressed with Mori’s performance that he started rethinking about some of the scenes that he had originally written. Basu decided to sizzle up the act by rewriting a few scenes and adding a different perspective to them.

“Really, I was blown over by the chemistry between Barbara and Hrithik. Some of the very scenes that originally looked great to me were seemingly fake once I saw the two on screen. I had to throw these scenes away and improvise at the last moment. Call it ironical but some of the best scenes in the film are those which were written at the very end. Hrithik and Barbara really look so real and good together.”

Basu, who worked for close to three years on the film, says shooting for the movie was a “great experience” but he avoided getting carried off.

“Rather than feeling overtly elated, I used to tell myself right through the making of ‘Kites’ to not get carried away. I had great locales, the best art direction and the stars. I could shoot in as opulent manner as possible but I knew that I didn’t have to go away from the soul and character of the film. It happens so many times that due to the aspects as mentioned, a director gets greedy.”

Also starring Kangna Ranaut in a special appearance along with Kabir Bedi, ‘Kites’ has music by Rajesh Roshan and releases all over this Friday.

Film: ‘Raavan’; Music Director: A.R. Rahman; Lyricist: Gulzar; Singers: Kirti Sagathia, Vijay Prakash, Karthik, Sukhwinder Singh, Rekha Bhardwaj, Javed Ali, Reena Bhardwaj, Ila Arun, Sapna Awasthi and Kunal Ganjawala; Rating:****

When the credits boast of composer A.R. Rahman, lyricist Gulzar and director Mani Ratnam, expectations are bound to be high. In ‘Raavan’, the trio has brought out a lethal combination presenting a soundtrack that is fresh, high on energy and in tune with the soul of the movie.

Starring Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, ‘Raavan’ has six songs but no remixes.

The album starts with ‘Beera’ that describes Abhishek’s character in the film. With strong orchestration, congo beats and foot-tapping rhythm, the song instantly connects with the listener and is highly intriguing. Sung by Vijay Prakash, Mustafa Kutoane and Keerthi Sagathia, ‘Beera’ is truly enthralling.

Next is ‘Behene de’. Wonderfully crooned by Karthik and Mohammed Irfan, it is the best song of the album. Even though it has a 50-second-long and haunting prelude, the listener doesn’t lose interest. In fact, the prelude creates more curiosity about what is in store. The track has a punch and holds the attention of the listener till the end.

Changing the mood of the album is the next song called ‘Thok de killi’. Sung by Sukhwinder Singh, the fast-paced track is loud, rustic and yet impressive. The increased pace and rise in the tempo towards the end gives an adrenalin rush.

Then there is ‘Ranjha ranjha’, which is an average track belted out by Rekha Bhradwaj and Javed Ali. The other songs of the album are so captivating that this one fails to create a mark.

Up next is ‘Khilli re’, a slow, soft love song that brings out the longing of a woman for her lover. Sung by Reena Bhardwaj in her sweet melodious voice, it has a balmy effect and the melody strikes a chord with the listener.

Finally, there is a wedding song ‘Kata kata’. The thumping beats and strong orchestration can make it chartbuster. Sung by Ila Arun, Sapna Awasthi and Kunal Ganjawala, the track has a celebratory tune and a Rajasthani folk touch.

On the whole, the album is a musical treat and impresses thoroughly. Away from the usual psychedelic beats and run-of-the-mill compositions, the music of ‘Raavan’ shows that Rahman is truly a maestro and when he teams up with Gulzar and Mani Ratnam, the result is pure magic.
